For details on NWCGE 2K7, please go here. Rick: Oh, no problem Brian.B: I hope you feel honored as my first interview subject for the website. Hopefully I can try to help out you and the NWCGE if I can. R: And you help out quite a bit, which we do appreciate very much. B: I'm glad to hear that. So, did you come up with the idea for NWCGE?
B: Ok, so NWCGE has been around for ten years. So how long have you been involved w/ it then?
B: So how did the NWCGE come about?
B: How long have you been involved with running the game shows? R: Like I said, I started in 2000. Each year I started doing more and more and more by the time 2006 came along, I was pretty much running the show.B: Right. Are you the one that runs the NWCGE website? R: I try. I will ask for certain information be put on there and its Hans that actually does all the changes right now.B: I don't mean to embarrass you, but I have to ask.... Web TV, what's up with that? R: Oh, I prefer Web TV because you can't get viruses. I know there's a lot of people saying I should get a Mac because its almost virus free.B: I would tell my friends about you and they'd notice you're on Web TV [from your email address] and they'd say oh he's hardcore! (both laughing) Like you're old school! I guess that's a good way of looking at it. As you might know, I found out about you and NWCGE thru John Hancock. [See John's Author page on SpGa] I met him on CraigsList. If I recall, he responded to a Shaq-Fu game I listed. R: (heh heh) Yep, yep, he told me about that story.B: So how long have you known John? R: I've known him since, let me see... 2005 at CGE that we met. He was there and this was when he just moved to Vancouver. We met and we started talking and I asked him where he lived and he said "Vancouver", and I was like Vancouver, Washington?? That's where I live! (both laughing)B: And you didn't even know? R: I didn't even know. We started talking and found out we were just 2 miles apart from each other.B: Wow, that's pretty cool! R: (laughs) Yeah. B: So do you prefer the old school John w/ the man beard or the new school clean shaved version? New school clean shaved John Hancock
B: Well you could say that he has the manbeard in spirit. (both laughing) I'm going to guess from your email name that Atari is the main thing you collect?
John Hancock with spiritual manbeardR: Atari 2600. That is my primary collection.B: And how did you get so into it as a collector and more than just a guy who plays a few games? R: I've been into it since '78. My parents got me a Atari 2600 for Christmas. All my friends were collecting baseball cards and stuff like that. And I wasn't into cards so, hey, I wanted to collect something else so why not Atari 2600? So I started collecting games for it.B: So was Atari 2600 your first? R: Yeah.B: Any interesting future plans for NWCGE or the shows or anything like that? R: Well I'd like to keep it here in Portland. I know Nate, one of our members, is planing on doing a Seattle show so we're going to have two shows every year. I don't know if the Seattle show will be quote "a NWCGE event" but it be mostly run by NWCGE staff.B: I wouldn't mind another show. The first one I went to was in Seattle last year. R: Yeah.B: I enjoyed hearing Joe Decuir talk [at the last NWCGE in Seattle]. That was pretty cool. R: Yeah. That's one of Nate's projects he plans on doing. Its going to be three rooms. One room is going to be for vendors. Another room is going to be for freeplay and arcades. And the third room is going to be used for keynote speeches and stuff like that. He plans on lining up quite a few people for keynote speeches so its going to be interesting.B: I'm definitely going to show up for that. R: Yup.B: So thanks again for your time and I really appreciate it. R: Oh, no problem. CategoriesPast Features
