God Hand (PS2)

I will start off by saying this game is definitely not meant for everyone.  It is a stand Beat ’em up and comes off very campy, almost live-action Batman series campy.  Keeping that in mind, on to the review.

The story starts off with the legend of a great hero defeating a great evil that was trying to destroy mankind.  Once the evil was defeated, he was given the title of Godhand because his hands were said to have held the power of the gods.  The story then shows you the modern times where you play as Gene, a regular man who gets entrusted with one of the Godhands by it’s last protector.  From there, the story gets almost formulaic but wacky.  Most of the game is not based on story but on the fighting itself.  If you are expecting a grand story that will keep you on edge, don’t get your hopes up.  What it lacks in completeness is makes up for it with how off-beat the story and dialogue can get. Even the ending credits show just how off the wall the game is.

The main focus of this game is the fighting and the combos you can pull off.  Just like every other beat ‘em up game, it can get repetitive.  To make up for that, the combo system and powerups available really help you customize how you want to fight.  With over 100 moves available your combo options you can defeat your enemies in many different ways.  There is also the God Reel which allows you to map limited number of special moves that require orbs to use.  They range from the use of 1-3 orbs. Where the gameplay really begins to breakdown is the camera.  There are certain move styles or combos that can cause your camera to move in a way that will not let you target enemies correctly or lose sight of other enemies coming onto the screen.  It is a minor problem, but can cause the game to be aggravating. You also have a level bar that goes up and down depending upon how much damage you give or receive.  This will determine how much the enemies go after you and how much damage they deal to you during attacks.

I have had many hours of fun with this game and have replayed the game many times.  There are 3 difficulties, the hardest being unlocked after beating the game on normal. Each one has it’s own advantages and disadvantages.  What really brought me into the game was just the humor and off the wall storytelling that made it very unique.  It isn’t the best game ever made, but it is a very entertaining and fun game.

Looks interesting. I picked up this game on sale for $9.99. I thought it was strictly a Vs. fighter, but if its more of a beat em up then maybe I'll open and play it.

I read some pretty dismal reviews about it.
As far as beat ‘um games with combos go I like Minority report: everyone runs (or is it everybody ones?) it's surprisingly good for a movie game, and Blood Rayne 2 has tons of cool combos, where you can cuts guys in half and stuff.

I actually just recommended this game to you in the forums!

It's a shame that Clover had to shut down after releasing God Hand.
