My friend is looking to sell a broken Xbox 360 Elite (RRoD'd, as far as I know) and I'm considering buying it. I was wondering what Microsoft's policy on repairing products that are not under warranty, though. I've searched around the net, but so far I've had no luck finding a definite answer.

Thanks!

If the warrenty is expired then it will probably cost $100-120 to get it repaired.  If it were me I'd probably try to fix it myself, there are plenty of guides to fix most rrod problems, if you're brave enough.

Hmm... I'm undecided. I'll have to find out in more detail just what is wrong with it. I'm definitely going to buy it, I'm just not sure if I'm going to try and fix it myself.

I think llama.com might sell the X-Clamp which is fairly easy to install from the instructions I've found and it fixes 90% of the Red Rings.

You might ask my buddy ProtonX about the costs, work necessary to fix, and if its even worth the trouble.  He repairs systems for various game store chains so he knows all about what goes into that.  He often has a excess of system parts, parting out broken systems to fix and make good ones.  Tell him you're a friend of mine and I'm sure he'd help you out.

I’d avoid it, xbox customer support is virtually non existent.

I wonder how permanent of a fix the X-Clamp is... I should look into that.

I had buddy install one about a month ago on his launch box and he hasn't had any issues with his anymore.

Honestly the X-clamp is a temporary fix.  Just how temporary is the question- I have fixed dozens with the X-clamp, and found that it can last 12min-2 yrs+.  I now reflow the solder which is best, and if the seal hasn't been broken see if MS will fix it for free- its got a 3 yr warranty.

Thanks! Supposedly I'm getting that 360 today. I'm going to check if the seal is intact and if it is I'm calling Microsoft!

So I received it and it turns out the sticker is damaged. I suppose the warranty is now void. I tested it and there was a loud screeching noise when it tried to read a 360 disc, and I received an "unreadable disc" error. Any suggestions!?

I'd guess its a problem with the magnets in the dvd drive, you'll have to take it apart obviously, pull the dvd drive out and find out which type of drive you have.  from there you can get tutorials on how to pull the dvd drive apart and glue the magnet back to the spindle

Just opening the tray should allow you to identify which of the 3 dvd drives you have.  I've heard there is a 4th but i do not know which it is( I was told Lite-On but thats the Phillips BenQ drive)  I do not believe it has anything to do with the hd-dvd drive.

If its the BenQ drive I'm not sure if there are many tutorials for them, last time i looked was months ago, and it was samsung or hitachi only.

use this link for a hitachi drive
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/hitachi-disassembly.htm

or this one for the samsung
