(Game Giveaway of the Day hasn't been offering any new games for over a month, so I'm closing this thread - The Free Computer Games Thread is now here.)

This is a thread I decided to start about mentioning when good games are offered on Game Giveaway of the Day.  For those that don't know, Game Giveaway of the Day is a part of the Giveaway of the Day website.  Basically, they offer the full registered versions of commercial and shareware software - but the deal being that it must be downloaded and installed the very day it is offered before midnight your time.  If you DL it and forget to install it that day, then you will have to register (pay) for the program or game if you still want it.

I see what the game is just about every day I'm on my computer.  To be honest though, I don't usually care for most of them.  Sometimes however, they have some REALLY good ones.  I'll post whenever they offer one I think is really good.  Or if anyone else checks that site like I do, you are welcome to post when you think something there is good as well.

Game Giveaway of the Day used to be a daily feature, but the website seems to just be a small company and now they only offer the games on weekends.  The focus is more on the Giveaway of the Day which is usually some kind of program.

If you don't want to miss each day's game, note that you can subscribe to daily email alerts on the Game Giveaway of the Day at the website.

OR... you can also subscribe to this topic using the NOTIFY link at the top

A neat little RTS game with a neat comic drawn look to it and wizards and warriors type theme.  One of my fave game themes.  Its available today (Sun, May 25 2008) for free, normally $19.95.  I DL'ed it, like it and intend to keep it.  If that sounds interesting, why not check it out?

Today's game is a turn based strategy game in a wizards and warriors theme - made by the same company that did Kingmania (in case you're wondering why the style looks similar).  Turn based strategy games seem like such a throwback, I hardly see any around anymore.  The gameplay is kind of like the classic PC game, Capture the Flag with the fog of war and everything.

Its available today (Sun, June 15 2008) for free, normally $19.95.

I've been playing Styrateg and its really fun and addictive.  Yes, the title is one of the most un-clever titles I've ever heard of for a game.  Seriously, its like the designers just GAVE UP when trying to think up a name.  But surprisingly, the story is really good.  The game has neat medieval music by medieval bands.  Some of the enemies are pretty neat.  Lord Vampire and Vampire Bride are pretty cool.  The control could be more streamlined, but being that I haven't seen a turn based strategy game made for like... ten years, I don't mind.  Its totally geeky and crusty and I love it!!

I would have loved to pick it up, but I wasn't near internet access at all on Sunday.  What limited internet I could get from my Motorola Q was all I had.  Forums don't play well with that phone.

Today's game is a sort of a Devilish meets Missle Command meets Monty Python's Flying Circus in a wizards and warriors setting.  That's probably not the best description, but I think if you play it, that would sort of make sense.  The game is called Troll and is made by Rake in the Grass, so it has the similar stylings of Stryateg (which I still have and play) and Kingmania.

Gameplay is classic "protect your base" - but your bases are little villages.  Your "paddle" is a big troll and with the mouse button, he swings his arm out.  Knights will come down, a dragon shoots fire balls, and etc., which you need to repel back to knock down a castle - or whatever else.  The humor is completely oddball.

Some downsides are that as I move the mouse around, sometimes I'd click out of the window so stopping the game - and also the game crashed for me in the first level...  Still its a very interesting game.

Its available today (Sat, July 5 2008) for free, normally $14.95.

Okay... the game has crashed twice on me.

And still I'm not totally sure what everything means as there is no instuctions in the game - nor are they listed on the official website.

Not worth paying for I'd say - but interesting for free.

I shoulda emailed you on it.   :D

My guess is that they'll offer it again one of these days - being that they repeat it so soon.

Archmage, a fantasy setting vertical shooter is being given away for free again.  You're a dragon in the game so you could say its like Dragon Spirits...  but its different.  Lots of shooting, powerups, etc, color.  A bit easy and repetitive in my opinion, but fun for bits of time and worth it while its free - if you enjoy mindless shooters.  I already have it from when it was offered on a previous day.  Its available today (Sun, July 13 2008) for free, normally $19.95.

Haven't posted in here a while, mainly because there hasn't been any especially notable free games offered on Game Giveaway of the Day for a while.  Today's is worth getting.  Its a witty point and click adventure mystery with nice spoken dialogue.  Your character is just run over by a truck and becomes a ghost... wearing a sheet.  You encounter a character who tells you your body is really cracked up, so you need to wear the sheet to keep your body together.  Then you're given a mission to find out about the past.  As a ghost, you use learned supernatural powers to explore your surroundings.

If you like games like Syberia or the Monkey Island series, you will probably like this.  Ghost in the Sheet is available for free if you download and install it today from Game Giveaway of the Day, Sunday, February 15 2009.  Price is normally $6.99.

Features
  • High-resolution graphics with detailed animations to immerse players
  • A RPG-like skill learning system: as players progress through the game, they learn new paranormal skills that are vital for future adventures
  • Skills range from the conventional paranormal Telekinesis to obscure skills like Scary Sound
  • Nonlinear gameplay that allows players to freely roam the factor while solving a variety of puzzles in any order
  • Music and sound design are seamlessly integrated into the game
  • Humorous and entertaining minigames integrated into the gameplay
  • No dying, mazes, slider puzzles, or timed sequences that can needlessly frustrate
  • NPCs who reveal hints and provide intriguing back-story
  • Comic style cutscenes to supplement the plot
Welcome to the afterlife! It`s nothing like you`ve expected. Ghost in the Sheet is a comedy adventure game of supernatural proportions. Become a ghost and master your new paranormal skill set to unravel the secrets of your life-after-death adventure! Mystery, intrigue, comedy and adventure await; aren`t you just dying to play?
  • Learn paranormal skills.
  • Entertaining mini-games.
  • Solve a variety of puzzles.

I love point-and-clicks! I wish I didn't have so many games on my plate right now. I'm going to download it and play it when I have time, though.
