Just trying to expand the discussion here, but I'm curious to see what everyone's favorite classic RPG is.  My favorite would probably have to be Super Mario RPG.  It was the first RPG I ever played and it was just a lot of fun. It was a welcome change to the standard Mario games.

I thought Mario RPG was okay but in my opinion not worth paying more than $10 for the cart of it.  Mario RPG 2 likewise I think has been dull of what I've played of it.  I haven't yet gotten to Mario RPG 3 or 4 yet - but I'll admit they seem to be nice to look at.

I like Rings of Power for sega Genesis.  Yes the game nobody has heard of, and ever fewer people have completed.  The ending is awesome however and it is quite possibly the hugest game on a sega Genesis cartridge.  I like my RPG's to have some crust around the edges.  Straight D&D RPG on IBM style... lovely.  I didn't have the manual and only later did I find out that there was a map could be found in the game.  Not knowing about the map was beneficial however, as it added a couple hundred hours to the playtime as I did a search on every single fricking square of the world.  (Yes, I actually did)  The game also had the best and most memorable music in my opinion.

Shadowrun on sega Genesis although is likewise very intense and painfully difficult.  So its another fave.

Tales of Phantasia on Super Nintendo is a fave - some of the best graphical effects on a cart I have seen.  The bobble head characters in the GBA port make that version seem creepy to me however.

Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Warrior are obvious choices too.  But everybody played those growing up I'm sure.

I'm just mentioning cartridge RPG's as CD RPG's is too easy.

I love Mario RPG! I'm at the very end of it (got it off the Wii Virtual Console) and it's all been really nostalgic. I'd have to say that takes the cake as far as my favorite classic RPG goes.

I don’t really have one, that was pretty much the age of turn based RPGs, and turn-based games aren’t my thing.
Though after playing Fallout 3, it pretty much seems to end up being turn-based since the real time combat is kind of lame. And I’m still having fun with it.

I’ll have to check out Fallout 1 again (I have a demo I downloaded) and see if I can get used to turn based combat.

The original Fallout is AWESOME.  Its definately an older crusty style PC RPG though.  ("crusty" meaning a typical older slow paced PC adventure game long on story and chraracter that is brutally hard and doesn't apologize for being so)  And if you like it, you'd like ALL the other PC RPG's put out by Interplay as they all have similar gameplay and great graphical style.  I haven't checked out the new version of Fallout 3, but to me I was really more into Fallout being a Interplay game than it being of the Fallout franchise.  I have heard good things about Fallout 3, but until I see it with my own fingers I tend to be skeptical, just because the other Fallout games put out on console were said to be different and not very good, and also I really don't know anything about Bethesda.

At least you didn't say Super Mario RPG like everyone else.   :P   Game was okay, but I felt it was overrated in that it really could/should have been much better.

So ya don't like turn based games huh?  I guess you only want to play stuff that will keep you awake and thinking.  How contemporary...  Hah, I play the stuff I grew up with where you didn't have to think, eventually you can win all games by dumb persistance, and you could (and I often do) fall asleep while you were actually playing at any time, wake up later and just continue the battle where it was without penalty.   B)   Ah...  the lovely benefits to playing turn based games.  You don't hafta be awake and thinking to be good at them.

Bethesda does some very good work. My favorite modern-era RPG is made by them, Oblivion. Great game.

I prefer Fallout 3 to Oblivion.
The oblivion gates were a pain, and they grew repetitive really fast.

I think I’ll like Mass Effect more too, it seems more linear (I prefer more linear games), and more cinematic; but I can’t say since the writing is so bloody small I can’t read it on a standard def TV, the text on the pipboy is bad enough but the text in Mass Effect is the size of news print!

My problem is just that I haven't played through too many old school RPGs. That's something I should really get on when I have the money to start buying games again.

How about the old SMS RPGs like Phantasy Star and Miracle Warriors? I don't remember a whole lot about them, but I was crazy about them back in the day! Plus I really dug Phantasy Star II, Sword of Vermillion and some others on the Genesis. I might have to track some of these down to see if they would still be any fun today.

I don't think I've played any RPGs son the Genesis. I beat a few Sega CD games but never Genesis. The Genesis Ultimate Collection is coming out soon. Which RPGs do you guys recomend I try first?

But my vote is a tie between Secret of Mana & Chrono Trigger. Just so many fond memories of playing SoM with my brother. Besides Seiken Densetsu 3 the series hasn't been close it's greatness. Chrono Trigger is probably my most beaten RPG of all time. I just recently played it again on the DS. Honorable mentions go to Suikoden 1 & 2.
