I have chance to pickup a 3DO from a buddy.  He says it works but I'm debating on whether it is really worth picking up or not. We've never played it and he apparently doesn't have any games for it anymore.  Anyone know much about these things?

To the best of my knowledge there aren’t really any must have exclusives for it.

I think if you want it for collecting I'd get it , but for games I'd pass.

mind you I'm no expert on it.

The 3DO has some good games.  From what I've noticed, it has a ton of first person flying and driving games.  Lots of FMV too like cd-i and SEGA CD did.

And just like the cd-i and SEGA CD, the 3DO has no copyright protection so you can make exact copies of actual games and play them on the system.  I know that's why cd-i, SEGA CD, and 3DO systems are still popular to pick up now.

The version of Road Rash on 3DO is the best one to get as it has extra music videos on it that the other versions doesn't have.  The original Alone in the Dark is one 3DO, the only console it came out for besides PC.  Lucienne's Quest is a crazy expensive strategy RPG - really slow paced and boring in my opinion.  Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Return Fire are some other good ones I can think of.

John probably knows a lot more about 3DO.  I've got maybe 30 to 40 games for it myself.

Here's probably the biggest (and maybe only) 3DO website I know of.

The only reason I know that is because I still remember seeing the 3DO when it came out at Electronics Boutique.  (Back then of course it was a system I'd never heard of - that seemed to be for "rich" people.  It plays CD games?   :o   How exotic!)  One of the 3DO games on the shelf was Road Rash and checking the box, it mentioned it featured music videos from bands on A&M Records.

One of the videos was by Therapy?, which was my favorite band back then in high school so I wanted the game just for that.  As I started collecting older games later on (Therapy? I still like, but no longer a fave) I got Road Rash on other systems (like SEGA CD) but noticed it had in game music by A&M bands, but only one music video by a single band, rather than a video by each band like the 3DO version has.  I looked it up on the internet so found out the 3DO version was the only one to have all the videos - so Road Rash was one of my most wanted 3DO games when I finally got a 3DO.

I wondered why you’d know about Road Rash; it didn’t seem like the kind of game you’d be into.

Hey, you do know me well!  Yeah, I actually got the game for the special bonus music videos rather than the game itself!

It was a simple deduction my dear Watson.
Seeing what kind of games you have and what ones you’re interested in I deduced that: Racing, fighting, FPSs, third person shooters, simulations (though you could be into Sim Ant?), and RTSs (but maybe the metroid FPSs?), aren’t something you’re interested in most of the time.
Of course those are just assumptions on my part.

I never played any of the Metroid FPS's so not into those EITHER.  I've never played any Halo at all in my life - so that gives you an idea.  I like TPS's, if that kind of stuff is like Contra or ship shooters like Space Invaders and Galaga.  Fighting equals nilch, being that I haven't even made a single comment on the Vs. Fighters boards here.  I actually played one of the Tekken series games at an arcade in SEattle for the first time - because was there with my friends and we were playing each other.

I do actually like some racing games - but arcade/Midway style racers where you have powerups like nitros and stuff, like Rock N Roll Racing, F-Zero (SNES), "Ironman" Super Off Road (An arcade classic!!).  I can appreciate, but not especially into realistic driving sims or cart racers with "slidey" type physics.

If there's a game style called "boring", then that's probably my favorite.   LOL   I'm kidding - but it seems lately I play stuff that puts me to sleep - and then I just turn it off when I wake up.  Seriously, I've been playing some more slow paced torturous repetitive type games that generally people hate - but stuff like that is good for putting me to sleep.  Some people play games for fun, to relieve stress, to connect with friends...  Lately, I play games to put me to sleep.

Is there a particular model that I should look for?  I'm going to start actively looking for one and wondering which one I should focus my search on.

The FZ-1 (front loading drawer) I've heard is the best model to get.  It looks the nicest in my opinion.  The FZ-10 (toploader) is a later cheaper model, but takes up less space.  I've had em both - never really had a problem with either.  I kept the FZ-1 as my player.  Never had the GoldStar.  The FZ models were made by Panasonic so they're more common, the GoldStar made by GoldStar.
