I'm not sure how widespread this is, but there is a chain of stores around here that actually open up the carts and place security strips inside.  I really dislike this practice because they could have damaged the chips inside during that process or even stripped out the casing.  Has anyone else come across this?

That’s insane, I've never heard of that. What chain is it?

I've never heard of that either.  Seems like a total hassle for them to do it.  I always thought the rental/store labels that many places put on the label sides of CD games was bad enough.

The chain is Book & Music Exchange.  The problem is, that there are 5 of those around here in a 50 mile radius then you have another store Book Broker and McVans.  Those stores are the only ones that deal in older games and hardware so whenever I buy anything from those 3 chains I open them up because the games get switched between them.  Luckily I have the security bits to open them up and remove them, but it's still a hassle.

Ah, no problem for me then as I never heard of Book & Music Exchange.  Unless they are related to CD & Game Exchange or Record Exchange?  Those stores I'm talking about don't sell books however, and they're not Mom and Dad stores, they're corporate.

They aren't related to either of those. I'd say about 50% of them have that. It does get old, but it's okay. Luckily I haven't come across many that were broken.

Dear god, I bought 11 used cartridge games yesterday and ALL OF THEM had the stupid security tag on the inside.  In the process of them putting that in there they had stripped out probably 4 screws across those carts.  Just ridiculous. Seriously, who is going to steal Madden 64?

Inside the cartridge? That's ridiculous...

Unfortunately I don't have too many mom & pop shops around here that even bother with used games. I have a single thrift store, but I've had quite a bit of luck with it. I got a model 2 Genesis there a few days back (don't think it works but I won't find out til I have the right cords) and We Love Katamari and Stretch Panic for PS2. Weird to see such niche games lying about in a thrift store.

I've seen some that were former rentals around here that had those strips in them (and there are NO M&P stores anywhere near where I live). Actually, there are no stores that sell old school games except thrifts and flea markets (maybe I should open one up?).
